Lightning protection grounding for instruments - Just Measure it

Lightning protection grounding for instruments

Why do we need lightning protection grounding?

For lightning protection of instruments and meters, we can use lightning protection modules. The grounding of lightning protection modules provides a discharge channel, which can quickly conduct and discharge lightning current when lightning strikes. The lightning protection module can only protect against lightning strikes after grounding.

Cable pipes, metal bridges, armor layers, shielding layers, etc. have good shielding effects after grounding, which can greatly reduce the current and voltage generated by lightning induction in cable conductors, thereby protecting instruments and meters from damage by lightning strikes.

How to perform lightning protection grounding on instruments and meters?

When the signal line of the instrument and meter control system enters the room from the outdoors, lightning protection grounding connection should be performed in places where power supply protectors or other lightning protection grounding connections are required.

The lightning protection grounding of the instrument and meter control system should be shared with the lightning protection grounding system of the electrical system. However, the grounding equipment should not be shared with independent lightning protection devices.

The cable trough and cable protection tube of the instrument and meter should be connected to the lightning protection induction grounding device of the electrical professional at the place where they enter the control room.

The lightning protection device in the control room should be connected to the lightning protection induction grounding device of the electrical professional.

Where the instrument and meter cable protection tube and the instrument and meter cable armor layer need to be lightning-proof grounded, they should be connected to the lightning protection induction grounding device of the electrical professional.

The spare core of the multi-core cable without a shielding layer outside the lightning strike area should be connected to the shielding grounding.

For shielded cables with grounded shielding layers or cables laid in steel pipes or in metal cable troughs, the spare core does not need to be grounded.
