Project Overview
Customer:
Location: Pasir Gudang, Johor, Malaysia
Application: Asphalt / Bitumen Tank Level Measurement
Product Supplied: DN80 80GHz Radar Level Sensor
Dalian Zero Instrument Technology Co., Ltd successfully supplied a customized high-temperature radar level sensor solution for asphalt tank level monitoring in Malaysia.
The customer required a reliable non-contact level measurement solution for hot bitumen storage tanks operating under extremely high temperatures.
Application Challenges
Bitumen and asphalt applications are known for difficult measurement conditions:
- High process temperature (~200°C)
- Strong radiant heat from hot liquid surface
- Vapor and condensation around the tank top
- Sticky medium with possible buildup
- Requirement for stable long-term signal transmission to the ground control panel
The customer was especially concerned about whether the radar sensor’s PTFE lens antenna and electronic housing could withstand continuous high-temperature operation.
Our Solution
After reviewing the installation conditions and tank structure, we recommended our customized:
80GHz High-Temperature Radar Level Sensor
Main specifications:
- Measuring Medium: Asphalt / Bitumen
- Measuring Principle: Non-contact radar
- Frequency: 80GHz
- Process Temperature: 150~250°C
- Output Signal: 4-20mA (2-wire)
- Power Supply: 24VDC
- Process Connection: DN80 Flange
- Antenna Material: PTFE
- Protection Class: IP67
- Installation: Top flange mounting
- Measuring Accuracy: ±2mm
The high-frequency 80GHz radar technology provides a narrow beam angle and stable echo performance, making it suitable for vapor and difficult asphalt tank conditions.
Installation Recommendation
To reduce the effect of radiant heat from the hot asphalt, we discussed two installation options with the customer:
1. Standard Flange Mounting
Suitable when the nozzle structure is open and signal reflection is unobstructed.
2. Hoisting / Extension Installation
Recommended when additional protection from radiant heat is required.
We advised the customer that:
- The electronic housing should be kept away from excessive heat accumulation.
- The radar beam path must remain clear for reliable measurement.
- Installation geometry is important for avoiding signal interference.
After evaluation, the customer selected the DN80 flange-mounted high-temperature version.
Production & Shipment
The order was confirmed and arranged for immediate production.
Before shipment:
- Signal output test completed
- High-temperature configuration verified
- Packaging inspection completed
- UPS international shipment arranged to Malaysia
Tracking service and installation support were provided to the customer.
Project Result
This project demonstrates that 80GHz radar technology can provide stable and accurate level measurement even in demanding asphalt and bitumen applications.
Key advantages include:
- Non-contact measurement
- Stable operation at high temperature
- Reliable signal transmission
- Low maintenance requirement
- Suitable for industrial tank monitoring
Dalian Zero Instrument Technology Co., Ltd continues to support customers worldwide with customized radar level measurement solutions for difficult industrial applications.
