Several elements to consider when measuring heavy oil with a radar level meter

What is heavy oil? Heavy oil is the oil that remains after diesel and petrol have been extracted from crude oil. The composition of this oil includes hydrocarbons, sulfur, and inorganic compounds. Of these, hydrocarbons make up a large proportion, the other two being small amounts and traces. What do I need to consider when measuring such oil with a radar level meter?

To solve this problem, the first step is to understand the characteristics of the crude oil medium. This is the core and key to choosing a radar-level meter.

Crude oil, a black product, has characteristics such as high viscosity, many impurities, high density, high vapor volume, and easy foaming during the oil feed. As far as the viscosity of this characteristic is concerned, choose the radar level meter as non-contact as possible, so as not to appear stuck.

The non-contact radar level meter is not in direct contact with the medium and is virtually unaffected by temperature pressure and water vapor. However, the radar level meter process pressure has a certain range, and the operation, when the pressure is high to a certain extent, can also cause measurement errors, which is worth noting. In addition, heavy oil at certain special times will present a turbulent state, when a large number of bubbles are generated, microwave signal transmission will have a certain degree of attenuation, which should also be paid attention to.

Radar level meters measure heavy oil, and in addition to the characteristics of the medium, the size of the tank also needs to be considered. Non-contact radar level meter products vary, and the measuring range is not the same. For large or medium-sized tanks, a radar level meter with high technological content should be chosen; for small tanks, the requirements can be reduced appropriately and a general radar level meter can be chosen.

The size of the tank is specific to the working conditions. In addition, the use of the tank is one of the factors that must be considered, whether the tank is used for direct feed, direct sale, or a process tank. For direct feed and direct sale tanks, accuracy considerations are key; for process tanks, stability is the priority and monitoring is the aim.

A radar level meter to measure heavy oil is not a simple matter, theoretical knowledge is only a basis, and more situations need to be tested in practice.
