Sealing Matters: Is Your Gasket Installed Correctly?

Gaskets are commonly used components in industrial equipment. But have you installed them properly? Incorrect installation can lead to gasket damage and even hazardous situations. Below is a step-by-step guide to ensure correct gasket installation.

Tools You’ll Need for Installation

Before starting, make sure to prepare the following tools:

  • A calibrated torque wrench, hydraulic tightening wrench, or other tightening tools

  • Steel wire brush (brass brush is recommended)

  • Helmet

  • Safety goggles

  • Lubricants

  • Other tools as per factory regulations

Cleaning and tightening fasteners require specific tools. Moreover, you must use standard installation equipment and follow safety protocols.

1. Inspection and Cleaning

  • Remove all foreign debris and fragments from the gasket sealing surface, fasteners (bolts, studs), nuts, and gasket.

  • Check fasteners, nuts, and gaskets for burrs, cracks, or other defects.

  • Inspect the flange surfaces for any warping, scratches, deep tool marks, or other defects that might affect gasket seating.

  • Replace any defective components promptly. If uncertain, contact the gasket manufacturer for advice.

2. Aligning the Flanges

  • Ensure the flange faces and bolt holes are properly aligned.

  • If perfect alignment is not achievable, report it immediately.

3. Installing the Gasket

  • Ensure the gasket meets the specified dimensions and material requirements.

  • Inspect the gasket for defects before installation.

  • Carefully insert the gasket between the two flanges, making sure it is centered.

  • Do not use adhesives or anti-stick agents unless specified in the gasket installation instructions. Align the flanges carefully to avoid damaging the gasket.

4. Lubricating the Bearing Surfaces

  • Use only the approved or specified lubricants on the bearing surfaces.

  • Apply sufficient lubricant to all threads, nuts, and gasket bearing surfaces.

  • Be careful not to contaminate the flange surfaces or the gasket with lubricant.

5. Installing and Tightening the Bolts

  • Always use the correct tools.

  • Use a calibrated torque wrench or other tools that control the torque.

  • Consult the gasket manufacturer’s technical department for torque requirements and guidelines.

  • Tighten the nuts according to the “cross-pattern tightening” principle.

Tightening Steps:

  1. Begin by hand-tightening all the nuts. Use a small manual wrench for larger nuts.

  2. Tighten each nut to about 30% of the required torque.

  3. Tighten each nut to about 60% of the required torque.

  4. Follow the “cross-pattern tightening” principle again, reaching 100% of the required torque.

    • Note: For larger flanges, more cycles of tightening may be required.

  5. Finally, at least once, tighten all nuts in a clockwise direction, reaching the required full torque.

6. Re-tightening the Bolts

  • Consult the gasket manufacturer’s technical department for guidelines on re-tightening.

  • Gaskets made of non-asbestos and rubber materials should not be re-tightened after high-temperature use unless specified.

  • Fasteners that have undergone thermal cycling (corrosion) should be re-tightened.

  • Re-tightening should be performed under ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure.
