How to Properly Install a Temperature Sensor - Just Measure it

How to Properly Install a Temperature Sensor

Introduction

Temperature sensors are among the most commonly used detection devices in industrial and environmental monitoring systems. Platinum resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), such as the Pt100, are known for their high measurement accuracy and stable performance. These sensors are widely applied not only for process temperature monitoring but also as reference standards in calibration systems.

Proper installation of temperature sensors is essential to ensure accuracy and reliability. The following guidelines highlight key considerations during installation.

Installation Guidelines

  1. Power-Off Installation
Always install temperature sensors with the power supply turned off to avoid electrical hazards or device damage.

  2. Material Compatibility
Ensure that the media being measured is compatible with the sensor’s wetted materials to prevent corrosion or chemical degradation.

  3. Protection Against Surges and Lightning
In harsh industrial environments where the sensor may be exposed to surges or lightning, it is recommended to install surge protection devices between the sensor and the power distribution system.

  4. Sensor Insertion Depth and Orientation

    • For horizontal or side-mounted pipelines, the insertion depth of the probe should be at least half the pipe diameter.

    • In bent pipe installations, the protective sleeve should align with the flow direction, and the probe must also reach at least half the pipe’s inner diameter.

    • For top-mounted installations on tanks or vessels, ensure the sensor is inserted deep enough to avoid errors caused by temperature stratification.

Conclusion

Correct installation of temperature sensors not only improves measurement accuracy but also extends device lifespan and ensures operational safety. For complex applications, always refer to the manufacturer’s installation guidelines or consult a professional.
