Ethylene oxide is a raw material for organic synthesis, which is widely used in medical, daily chemical, coating, metal processing, and other fields. In the chemical production process, the storage and use of ethylene oxide have certain difficulties and safety risks. Measuring the level of ethylene oxide in storage tanks is a necessary production control measure. However, due to the special nature of ethylene oxide, the level measurement faces some challenges, which will be introduced in this article.

Ethylene oxide has three main characteristics. The first one is strongly volatile, which makes it easy to vaporize during level measurement, resulting in inaccurate measurement results. 

The second is corrosive: ethylene oxide can be corrosive to conventional measuring equipment, reducing the service life of the equipment. The third ethylene oxide requires high temperature and high-pressure conditions for storage and use, which makes it difficult to locate the liquid level accurately with a conventional level measuring devices. 

The radar level meter is an excellent instrument in the field of high-precision liquid measurement. Using a radar level meter has the following advantages: non-contact measurement: radar level meter adopts a non-contact measurement method, uses microwave signal for sensing detection, and completes level measurement without contact with ethylene oxide, avoiding the influence of vaporization on measurement. 

Corrosion resistance: The sensors and antennas used in radar level meters are usually made of different kinds of materials, which have stronger corrosion resistance to liquids compared to traditional devices. 

High precision measurement: The radar level meter adopts microwave signal transmission, which has the advantages of high precision, fast and stable measurement, and the measurement accuracy can reach a millimeter level.

A chemical plant has several ethylene oxide storage tanks, in which the components for level measurement are unstable, and a reliable level measurement method is needed. 

The traditional measurement equipment used in the past could not detect the ethylene oxide level stably and accurately, causing ethylene oxide waste and production safety hazards. Therefore, a high precision level measurement solution is needed to ensure the accuracy and safety of the production process. 

By analyzing the characteristics of industrial settings and the customer’s needs, we recommended the radar level meter as a solution for the customer. According to the characteristics of the ethylene oxide storage tank and engineering requirements, the best radar level meter installation location was selected. 

Taking into full consideration the volatility and corrosiveness of ethylene oxide, we used corrosion-resistant materials to make the mounting bracket for the level meter and ensured that the contact part with ethylene oxide was made of special materials. 

Then the installation and connection of the radar level meter were carried out to ensure that the transmitted and received microwave signals could accurately pass through the ethylene oxide and return to the receiver.

By choosing a radar level meter to measure the liquid level of the ethylene oxide storage tank, the radar level meter has high precision liquid measurement capability and can achieve millimeter-level measurement accuracy to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the production process.
