Radar level meters are generally installed outdoors, mainly in lakes, shallows, and rivers. Other radar level meters are basically used inside vessels, for example in tanks.

There are many different kinds of tanks where radar level meters are installed, such as spherical tanks, conical tanks, vaulted tanks, and so on. Today, we will talk about the considerations for the installation of radar level meters for different tanks.

Firstly, let’s talk about conical tanks. Generally speaking, a radar level meter cannot be installed above the inlet, as this would affect the accuracy of the measurement. However, if the top of the conical tank is flat, we can choose to install the radar level meter right in the middle of the filling top.

After talking about conical tanks, let’s take a look at arch tanks and round tanks. For these two types of storage vessels, we must not install them in the center. Radar level meters installed in the center will produce indirect echoes and will also be affected by multiple echoes.

In addition to paying attention to the installation position of the different tanks, we have to pay attention to the presence of obstacles inside the tank. If there are obstacles inside the tank and they are affecting the measurement or causing interference, we have to add a reflector plate or add a waveguide or bypass tube for the measurement as appropriate.

The addition of a reflector plate refracts away the obstruction signal. By adding a waveguide or bypass tube, we can avoid the influence of obstacles on the measurement. However, the addition of a wave-guide tube only works for media with good fluidity, not for viscous media.
